Abstract

The Avalokiteśvara cult had succeeded in taking root in so many countries in East Asia. Avalokiteśvara cult was able to retain the devotion of the faithful because of the recommendations for worship found in the chapter on the bodhisattva of the Lotus Su tra that encourages people to invokaThe Avalokitesvara cult had succeeded in taking root in so many countries in East Asia. Avalokitesvara cult was able to retain the devotion of the faithful because of the recommendations for worship found in the chapter on the bodhisattva of the Lotus Sutra that encourages people to invoke the bodhisattva's matchless power of compassion. Therefore, there are countless stories and images of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in the Buddhist cultural sphere. It is of course true that Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara was seen and understood differently by different people. It is also the case that different people sought different things from the deity.

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the Korean transformation of Avalokitesvara cult associated with a few key issues regarding Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara because the theoretical principles of the Avalokitesvara cult need to be reviewed critically within the context of the most recent scholarship on specific and actual religious respects. This dissertation aims to find the existence of a fairly homogeneous style of Avalokitesvara cult in Korea. Therefore, this dissertation discusses how the Avalokitesvara cult transformed Korean society with the development and transformation of Avalokitesvara cult in Korean history and the survey which shows Avalokitesvara cult found in contemporary Korean society. Also, this dissertation investigated the process of the indigenization of Avalokitesvara cult in Korea, China, Japan and Sri Lanka. Finally, this dissertation introduced the Korean Buddhist Cheontae Order, one of the major Buddhist orders in Korea, because it has represented as a major Buddhist order related to the Avalokitesvara cult.e the bodhisattva's matchless power of compassion.
